    some song notes

    *The Time is Magic -
lots of 2nds against 1sts here......if you've got a musical mind, these things might strike you as 'interesting', and i'm glad, cuz you're the kind of person i put em in there for!!
i like the idea of 2nds, always have. it creates a tension.. and since this was the opening song, i did not want it to feel 'resolved'..... i wanted it to just open the headspace up for what's to come.
i did this drum track in Sony Acid, which is a program that can be used for putting together midi sequences that drive pre-recorded drum samples....... the voices, the sounds effects, everything, i built into acid, output a 16 bit stereo track, and then dubbed all the guitars and bass on top of it.
    pretty simple, really. very effective.
the acid sample loops sound good.

    *Walked Away -
actually, it's my public service announcement about mental health.
nothing in the lyric is actually autobiographical, and yet it all applies.
this drum track is done with toontracks SUPERIOR Drummer.

    *The Strip -
you know, i have family that lives near there... made my first trip out to vegas about 13 years ago,
and this song was a summation of my experience.
i think there's one verse, right?
it's just old school boogie, but i had a blast mixing it, and adding in the acoustics at the beginning, and the strats in the middle.
    superior drums.

    *High Time -
one of my favorites on the album, the lyric for this one poured out in about a half hour. boom, done.
it's meant to be fun and uplifting. Taylor 414 and Seagull Mosaic on this one.

    *The Travel Song -
another sony Acid drum loop drum track.
    kind of a king's x vibe.
the thing about this one is..... and the reason it comes off as a bit smoother than some of the other material, is...... it's a Waltz!
    LOL
    the story behind the lyric.....

i wrote this, right after finding out about a real hard time my two friends were having on their 'cross-europe' bike trip....
    at Gatwick airport.
this is about the guys having one of their bikes trashed by the airlines,
and then running into some friends later down the road, that showed up and helped out.

    *Waiting to Shine -
written for a close friend that is still waiting to shine.
this was an older riff i had, that instead of the maj 7th thing, it was a minor diminished chord.
i still like that riff, and might right another song around the original riff....

    *Twilight Rain -
this is purely autobiographical. i did a demo of this several years ago, and it was a full band arrangement.
i did this version as part of a 'fact finding mission', and ended up liking it better.
features real thunder and rain, recorded from the downstairs entrance door into our backyard in utah, and also features our little windchime on the back porch.

    *Headin for the Weeds -
    my anti war rant.
the whole 'war' section in the middle, was a blast to come up with.
i just wanted cacaphony, and even tho i tried to impart some angst, it still comes off fairly groovy and proper, exactly opposite of what i was going for!
hehe, so i just went with it.
this was written about 5 years into the Iraq war.
    another sony ACID drum track.

    *Speak to Me -
this is a remake of a demo i did back in 1999. a buddy of mine, i met on the roland VS Planet website, last seen in florida.
i took him my original demo, and said 'do whatever, 'carte blanc', the entire backing track, sans guitars and vocals, he created on top of my demo, using Nuendo and a host of samplers and virtual instruments, and it rocked! he sent me a MP3 of what he had, and that was all i ever got!
still liking the tracks, i just decided to aggressively process the 256 kbps mp3 file i had, and that's what i used for the backing tracks.
i converted it to 24 bit (with TONS of losses) and tweaked it quite a bit!
it gives it an almost 'lo-fi' feel, that actually works.

    *Allan’s Resolve -
well, this winds up the album, i originally had it in the middle of the tracking.
    dedicated to allan holdsworth.
i decided if anybody made it to the end, they could mellow out a bit before they never listened again.
    heheh
this is a extra track from the 'trouble' album sessions.
i had the drum tracks from Brent Dacus, (D/FW area), but had never finished the song.
the drums were so good, i just had to use them.

about

This is an album, in the old school tradition... meant to be listened to from front to back.
it celebrates a love of rock, blues, and pop all at the same time.

This album was originally released in 2011, and ever since then, i wanted to re-record the whole thing... and i recently had a custom telecaster built, and this inspired me to re-record most of the rhythm guitar parts with an updated sound... this led to more tracks, vocals, bass parts, re-arrangements, so in fact, this is a brand new album!

at least, in my mind, it is! :-)

I do hope that you will enjoy this album, support more music by downloading it,
and help me keep putting out more new material by supporting the cause!
rock on.
